Tragic Unearthing: Remains of Vanished Mum and Daughter Located in Freezing Units in the Alpine Nation

The remains of a 34-year-old woman and her young daughter, 10 have been located inside freezers in an flat in western Austria.

The deceased, a Syrian woman and her child, who had been unaccounted for for a number of months, were found on Friday. The freezers were placed behind a drywall partition in the dwelling, located in the Innsbruck area.

Two individuals, a Austrian man, 55 and his 53-year-old brother, were taken into custody in June. The 55-year-old, a colleague of the Syrian woman, told police last week that there had been an unfortunate event—but disputed homicide.

Addressing the media recently, a official for the public prosecutor's office stated the two suspects were being kept in custody on "high likelihood of murder".

The identities of those concerned have been withheld by police, in accordance with national regulations.

The vanishing of the mother and child was originally brought to light by the female victim's relative, who lives in Germany, on the 25th of July last year.

Authorities revealed the male associate informed them at the time she had embarked on an prolonged visit with her child to visit her parents in the nation of Turkey.

The victim's bank card was then noted as being active in foreign locations several times.

However when police examined the mother's apartment, her mobile phone was discovered.

A witness also stated listening to a disturbing sound in the flat, and cries of "mother" on the day the mother and child were presumed to have gone missing.

A wider official inquiry was initiated, with investigators finding several texts originating from the mother's device—among them a job termination message to her workplace and texts to the male colleague.

Authorities said a four-figure sum was also sent to the suspect.

A senior police official told media representatives on recently that a rented space had been leased before the victims' disappearance and a freezer had been installed within.

The male siblings took out the cooling unit from the facility on the day the mother and daughter disappeared, the official revealed. And a shortly afterward, they purchased a second unit.

Authorities state they think this points to the demise were planned in advance.

"How they died remains unclear due to the condition of the remains," she said.

The prosecutor's spokesman—from the legal authorities—said the exact sequence of events is still unclear, but the remains were professionally hidden and went unnoticed during a previous house search.

Although the men were taken into custody in June, it was only on November 12 that the 55-year-old admitted to an event and to concealing the remains. He denies any murderous intent, officials stated.

Meanwhile, his younger brother confessed to a concealment but rejected awareness of a homicide.

The two suspects are at this time in custody awaiting trial in jails in Innsbruck and Salzburg, around 117 miles (189km) apart.

In a joint statement, the nation's official for women's affairs and Justice Minister stated the "suspected killing of two... represents the sudden and brutal end of a mother and child and uncovers a heartless setup".

"Women and girls are being killed due to the sole reason that they are female," they continued.

"Murders of women are a profoundly embedded and society-wide problem that we must combat firmly."
