Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation head James the former director has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and hindering a lawmaking procedure.

His lawyer entered the plea representing him in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.

Patrick Fitzgerald declared he would try to have the case dismissed for several reasons including that his client, a opponent of President Donald Trump, was being targeted.

Mr Comey was formally accused soon after the former president pushed his chief prosecutor to take action against him.

Judicial Process

At the proceedings on mid-week, the defense counsel Mr Fitzgerald informed the magistrate they planned to present multiple legal requests to dismiss the proceedings before a court case, claiming the prosecution was vindictive and that a federal prosecutor was unlawfully designated to assume control of the case.

James Comey's proceedings was first overseen by the original attorney, who left his position under pressure from the former president after his examination into another opponent - New York Attorney General Letitia James - was unable to initiate prosecution.

Courtroom Atmosphere

James Comey came across in positive mood as he walked into the courtroom on mid-week, chatting with his legal team and being lighthearted. He was supported by his spouse, Mrs Failor and daughter Maureen, a US lawyer who the former government dismissed.

After listening to the judge state his constitutional guarantees and the two counts against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, James Comey was questioned if he grasped the allegations.

"Yes your honour. Thank you very much," he told the proceedings.

Previous Events

The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from four years and was dismissed about four months into Donald Trump's initial presidency as national leader. At the period, Mr Comey was overseeing an examination into international campaign influence and whether there were any connections between Moscow and Trump's campaign.

While in office, Mr Comey caused a negative reaction from Democrats when he announced just shortly prior to the 2016 election that he was investigating presidential nominee Clinton's use of a non-governmental email account. Indictments against Clinton were not pursued, leading to criticism from the Republican party as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Prosecutors allege James Comey lied to the legislature during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in recent years when he was being questioned about both the email probe as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They allege he provided false information to the legislative body by stating he had not authorized a person at the agency to release to journalistic entities details about the agency probes.

Legal representatives also accuse James Comey of "wrongfully trying to affect, block and impede" the panel by making false statements to it.

Personal Comments

Via social media Mr Comey shared to his online platform after he was indicted, he declared he was innocent and accused Trump of acting like a "tyrant".

"We have understood for a long time that there are ramifications to opposing Mr Trump," he stated. "We will not live on our kneeling."
"I'm innocent," he stated further. "Thus initiate a trial."

The accusations against Mr Comey came after the former president published on social media insisting on his attorney general, Ms Bondi, take legal action against Mr Comey and others.
