No less than 64 Dead in Rio de Janeiro's Biggest Security Action on Gangs
No less than 64 civilians died in a police operation cracking down on the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the region's records.
Four police officers were included in the fatalities during the police action in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, state officials reported. Over 80 individuals were taken into custody.
Fierce clashes commenced when about 2,500 police forces entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command responded with gunfire, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives stated.
The UN Human Rights Office stated it felt "horrified" by the security action, urging "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Mission Consequences
The slum neighborhoods near the city's international airport is considered to be the central command of among the nation's strongest illegal networks.
Local authorities stated no less than 50 of the deceased were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Dozens of people were injured, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.
Resident Accounts
Residents have likened the hillside area - inhabited by approximately 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the operation began.
Roads remain closed across the area.
Organized Crime Spread
The criminal network has been increasing their territory across the Rio state, growing illegal substance trade paths and power in the informal settlements.
Security forces said in excess of 200kg (441lb) of drugs were confiscated in the mission, along with dozens of firearms.
Operation Background
The coordinated mission by various security forces was preceded by a twelve-month inquiry.
Dozens of the suspects are believed to be participants in an organization from the Brazilian state who are currently hiding in the metropolitan area.
