Minecraft's Mounts of Mayhem Update Brings Forth a Beautifully Chaotic New Spear to the Game
The winter game drop for the block-building phenomenon has arrived — and it includes the first new weapon introduced into the title since the heavy club made its debut. The spear is now available and it might just alter your gameplay in Minecraft, particularly when you enjoy mayhem.
An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides
The Mounts of Mayhem drop also introduces several new features and updates focused on riding animals in the game. That central theme made the spear the ideal addition for this release, as the development team had long felt it was the moment to introduce a new weapon.
"We knew initially that we desired a fresh armament that would add some more range, and we designed it specifically for fighting from atop a creature," stated a senior product manager. "We experimented with a few different ideas, but the lance was the one that both played wonderfully when we ran our trials and also was visually fitting for the use case."
If you're asking yourself whether mounted combat means you can tilt at your friends on steeds, the response is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an offensive action ideally crafted for it.
"[Jousting on horses is a primary use cases for the spear, and it's so much fun," the lead continues. "The spear has two attacks: You have the jab attack, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a powerful lance where you couch your lance and deal increased harm [with] the more speed and velocity you have. So [it’s] perfect for mounted duels."
Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures
The unruly pleasure can extend beyond there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've visited The End, the developers have an delightfully absurd idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] excellent for strapping on the wings and going out and creating genuine chaos," she hints.
In other words: Jousting in the clouds is now possible, and it deserves to be an competitive event immediately.
Another key feature in this fresh content is the underwater mount. This sea-dwelling mob, which is modeled after the seashells players have gathered for years, can be tamed and mounted for deep-sea journeys. Not only will it carry you through the water quicker than swimming, it'll also preserve your breath meter, so there's no requirement to surface for a breath.
The rest of the additions are primarily things that are out to get you, as is the way of Minecraft. Naturally, there's also a zombie Nautilus appearing in the water, frequently with a zombie villager on its back. If you manage to defeat the Drowned, though, you can tame the zombie Nautilus — or the regular one, for that matter — with a puffer fish.
"We've been thinking about this challenge for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it felt like the right time to also introduce something for the ocean depths," the lead explains. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a few different ideas for sea mounts that we wanted to test, but the Nautilus initial artwork looked striking, and we have the connection to the Nautilus shell that was found within the game."
She also adds that there are actually two different types of undead nautilus: standard and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] add variety to what you find underwater."
Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements
Further inclusions include the Parched, biome-specific undead archers that can survive in the sun, which means there's no refuge from them if you end up in that region. Sometimes you'll see them on camel husks, another new mob. Camel husks have an striking appearance that sees their skeletal frame exposed. The same goes for undead steeds, who have a comparable rib-popping design and can sometimes be found at night with a spear-carrying undead rider on their back.
The final pair of items on the drop's list are refinements, including some highly requested adjustments to riding horses. Now, you can traverse waterways while atop a horse. Additionally, high-tier barding is now available at the crafting table, so you can give your horse the top-tier safeguarding it deserves.
A Fittingly Chaotic Finale
All told, the final game drop of the year is a pretty good one. The spear alone — and the potential for chaos — would have felt like a major improvement. Add in the Nautilus, and new threats trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a little more dangerous.
The Mayhem Mounts content drop is live for all major editions of Minecraft.
