Major Online Failure Impacts Many Websites and Mobile Apps
A large-scale web disruption has impacted many online platforms and mobile apps around the world, and users reporting troubles accessing the internet after problems at Amazon’s web hosting system.
The impacted services encompass the social media app Snapchat, Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, along with multiple Amazon-owned operations such as its main retail platform and the Ring doorbell device manufacturer.
In the UK, Lloyds bank was impacted along with its affiliates the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, while there were additional accounts of difficulties reaching the the tax authority site on that morning. Additionally in Britain, several Ring device owners turned to online platforms to complain their security devices were malfunctioning.
In the UK alone, notifications of disruptions on individual platforms totaled the thousands for every service.
Amazon reported that the problem originated in the Atlantic coast of the America at AWS, a section that offers vital web framework for many businesses, who lease resources on Amazon servers. Amazon Web Services is the most extensive web hosting system.
Soon after the start of the day (PDT) in the America (8 in the morning BST), Amazon confirmed “increased problem frequencies and delays” for AWS services in a zone on the Atlantic seaboard of the US. The widespread consequence seemed to affect services worldwide, and the problem monitoring service indicating problems with the same sites in different parts of the world.
The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a tool that tracks online failures, further indicated a rise in outages on that morning, including several cases located in Virginia, the region of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where the company stated the issues originated.
