The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh installment, confirmed by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode series written by the show's creator starts production in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The last season wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but official word only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain working to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

However, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a new season."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful television series of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Stephen Graham.

The BBC has not yet announced exactly the new season will premiere.

The finale of series six brought the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers indicated at the moment there were no plans for further series.

However, the network announced on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
