Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Considering a 2028 Presidential Run
The California governor, a leading Democratic figure, has disclosed that he will determine whether to run for president in 2028 following the 2026 elections conclude.
"Absolutely, I couldn't be truthful if I denied it," Newsom commented when asked about giving serious thought to a White House bid following the 2026 midterms. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I'm not."
Newsom's current term as governor wraps up in the start of 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. However, he cautioned that any choice is still years away.
"Fate will determine that," he said.
Growing Prominence as a Trump Critic
The California governor has emerged as a prominent adversary of the former president's team, leveraging his social media accounts and championing a ballot measure that would increase Democratic representation in Congress in response to GOP gerrymandering. This strategy has invited attacks from adversaries.
Controversy Over Funds
The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor is indifferent about Californians in a weekend appearance on Fox News. Duffy disclosed plans to pull government money from the state and suggested suspending the authority to provide commercial driver's licenses.
"I plan to withdraw $160 million from California," Duffy said, following a recently reported deadly accident in the state involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that caused loss of life and casualties.
Newsom's office highlighted that the federal government had renewed the worker's status on several occasions, which enabled him to receive a CDL under federal law.
Duffy had earlier stated he was withholding $40 million from California for ignoring linguistic standards for CDL holders.
Firm Rebuttal from the Governor's Office
"Former D-list reality star, now Secretary of Transportation, still doesn't understand national statutes," Newsom's office said in a previous comment countering Duffy's threats. "Meanwhile, unlike this clown, we rely on data: California commercial driver's license holders had a fatal crash rate nearly 40% lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the single state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Statistics are clear. The Trump administration does."
Voter Sentiment and Future Prospects
A recent poll revealed that 72% of Democrats and 48% of all registered voters indicated that the governor ought to campaign for the White House in the next election cycle. In recent years, his approval ratings has increased to an mean of 33.5% from previous levels, while his unfavorability has decreased from an mean of previous highs to under 40%.
Earlier this year, Newsom commented while visiting several swing states that he had "uncertainty" about his future for the next presidential election.
He noted his earlier challenges, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of five.
"The thought that a individual who had modest test scores, who continues to find reading challenging, who was often seated at the back – that such a possibility is discussed is, by itself, amazing," he commented. "Who the hell knows? I await who steps forward in the next election and who meets that moment. And that remains the key point for the U.S. citizens."
