A uniquely yellow-fronted residential building visible behind helped us locate the video.
Our team is verifying images and video circulated this morning that depict the scene of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to check the location from which the pictures were from relied on social media reports indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.
Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
