"When are you interviewing Haim?" a message pops up. "My request was to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

There's just one problem: I also desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Several high-profile admirers have publicly coveted the honor.

The evidence suggests a special quality is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy Award hopefuls.

In the tradition of the best bands, they're a close trio. Their videos often show them striding in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such pure happiness you inevitably think, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that fans told us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a drum kit'," states Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That is the ultimate compliment. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire people to start a band."

"So everyone is invited to be the fourth Haim sister."

Historic Recognition

The band are connecting from home, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I watch the lists every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the nomination isn't lost on the band.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge milestone," continues Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Humour

The record emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that strange liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The lyrics track departures and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real life who they are becoming.

"I adore summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to actively work on ignoring the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That newfound confidence called for a fresh approach – more unpolished and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drums.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Laughter

The trio's openness shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal tales.

A former partner broke up with Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Legacy

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their position in the music world.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an international following.

Yet Haim will forever be their number one priority.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was a young child," shares Alana. "There is nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still making music."
