Democrats Denounce Trump After He Claims They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed outrage after Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and asserted they should be detained and sentenced "by death" following their publication of a contentious video.
The Recording That Sparked the Dispute
The video footage, shared on Tuesday, features six Democratic congress members who previously worked in armed forces or intelligence positions.
"Like us, you all swore an oath to safeguard and defend this constitution," the officials affirmed in the 90-second video. "At present, the dangers to our governing document aren't just from overseas, but from domestically. Our regulations are explicit, you can refuse illegal orders, you can reject unlawful commands, you should reject illegal orders. No one has to follow directives that break the statutes or our founding principles."
Donald Trump's Furious Reply
The recorded statement reportedly prompt a furious reply from the ex-president.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate post, he wrote: "This constitutes really bad, and Risky to our Nation. Their statements cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent message, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Representatives React
Following Trump's comments on that day, House Democratic leader released a joint declaration censuring the comments.
"Partisan aggression has no position in the United States," they stated. "Representatives who appeared in the video all served our country with exceptional loyalty and honor. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's appalling and harmful death threats against elected officials, and call on House Republicans to forcefully do the same."
The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in touch with security officials "to guarantee the safety of these officials and their families."
"Donald Trump must right away delete these extreme social media posts and retract his aggressive discourse before he gets someone killed," the announcement stated.
Representatives' Firm Reaction
The lawmakers who appeared in the video also published a response.
"We serve as ex-military personnel and defense specialists who value this nation and made an oath to defend and support the national charter of the United States," they stated. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we aim to honor it. No warning, pressure, or incitement will stop us from that fundamental obligation."
"The most revealing aspect is that the former president views it punishable by capital punishment for us to restate the legal requirements," they added. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their protection as they fulfill their pledge to the national charter and responsibility to follow only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our duty."
They stated: "Every American must unite and censure the ex-president's demands for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a moment for principled stance."
More Partisan Reactions
The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's comments and shared on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is demanding the execution of government members."
He added: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this right away and without qualification."
The Republican House speaker supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This constitutes very harmful, you have leading members of Congress instructing military personnel to defy commands, I think that is unprecedented in the nation's past."
The Conservative representative also reportedly stated to media outlets that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the violation of treason" but that "legal experts have to examine the language and establish all that."
Administration Reaction
During a White House press conference on later that day, when inquired by a reporter, "Would the president want to execute members of Congress?", the executive branch representative responded: "Absolutely not."
"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the spokesperson stated. "You have sitting members of the federal government who worked together to arrange a video message to members of the US military, to serving soldiers advising them to disobey the commander in chief's legal commands."
She added: "The sanctity of our defense system relies on the command structure, and if that system is violated, it can cause casualties, it can result in chaos, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are essentially supporting."
