Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Meloni to Auction Off International Gifts for Good Cause
Relinquishing unneeded gifts can be seen as a little discourteous – unless it's done the right way.
A Philanthropic Sale
The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell a reported 270 presents received by her by foreign dignitaries during her travels. This unusual assortment could include gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.
These items, combined, have an approximate value of €800,000. They will be auctioned off to the highest bidder by a Rome-based auction firm. A date is yet to be set, but the aim is to conduct the sale before Christmas, with the proceeds donated to a selection of charitable causes.
Palazzo Chigi Holdings
The presents are said to be stored in a repository on the upper level of the prime minister's official office. It has been reported that Meloni furthermore considering auction off gifts given to her political forerunners that have been gathering dust over a long period.
The full gift list is yet to be disclosed, but some insight was gleaned earlier this year when an 11-page list of items received was submitted to lawmakers. The discussion focused on if a statutory cap on gift value was being honored. Legally, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents worth more than €300.
A Global Assortment of Gifts
Notable gifts feature:
- A woven wrap from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
- A box of jewellery from the president of Slovakia.
- A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
- A tablet from the Ukrainian president.
- Artworks from Moldova.
- Various other items including makeup, a board, and several rugs received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Possibly the most unusual gifts included the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.
Diplomatic Backdrop
Supporters have applauded Meloni, mainly from within her party, with building relationships with foreign leaders and positioning Italy as a significant player on the global scene once again.
The forthcoming sale symbolizes a unconventional way to manage the state presents that are collected during a political career.
