A Account of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a University Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dorm Ground
During the year 2006, I traveled to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. I assumed to book a place to stay after getting there, yet when I arrived, a large conference was taking place and every single budget hostels and cheap hotels were fully booked.
Coming from Singapore, I thought maybe I could spend the night at the terminal – but soon learned the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes all night. With no idea what my next move should be and getting a bit desperate, I boarded a city-bound bus and found myself drifting near a gaming venue, thinking I might spend the evening in an establishment that was open 24/7. That wouldn’t put me in the ideal condition to succeed at an interview the following day, however, being a student on a tight budget, I couldn’t afford.
The world needs more people like that woman.
I must have looked out of place because a woman saw me loitering in the city center and inquired if I was OK. I recounted my predicament and immediately she offered I was welcome to sleep on the floor in her student dorm at the local university – an ideal turn of events, as that’s where my interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering a meal: one stuffed baguettes she had taken home her work shift. This gave me the bathroom and a protected spot and secure to spend the night.
In retrospect, I now understand what a big chance she undertook as a young woman allowing a man who was a complete stranger stay in her room. In those days I operated under a bubble of male privilege and was oblivious about things like that. As a dad now, I am astonished she took that chance – but still deeply appreciative.
Ultimately, I did not study at that university, and I didn’t meet her again, but I’ve never forgotten that incredible gesture of kindness. My sincere desire is that life has rewarded her generosity abundantly. Our society requires more people like that woman.
